Insurance claims help after property damage
A loss is stressful, and the first hours matter. Here is what to do first and how a claim usually works, so you can protect your property and your claim.
Six steps to protect your property and your claim.
Make sure everyone is safe
Call 911 if anyone is in danger. Stay out of areas with standing water near electricity, heavy smoke damage or structural damage until it is safe.
Report the loss to your insurance company
Call as soon as you can. Ask what your policy covers and what it requires of you, and write down your claim number and your adjuster’s contact.
Call a restoration company right away
Most policies expect you to take reasonable steps to stop further damage. Calling us starts protection and drying, even while your claim is still being reviewed.
Document the damage
When it is safe, take photos and video before anything is moved or cleaned. Make a list of damaged items and keep receipts for emergency expenses.
Keep damaged items until they are reviewed
Do not throw damaged items away until your adjuster has seen them or your insurer says you can, unless they are a health hazard.
Stay in touch with your adjuster
Share your claim number and your adjuster’s contact with us, and tell us what your insurer requires. Keep notes of every call and message.

Contact SigmaThis page is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Coverage decisions are made by your insurance company under your policy.
Should I call my insurance company or a restoration company first?
Both, as soon as you can. Report the loss to your insurer, and call a restoration company so the damage does not spread. If you are not sure what to do first, call us and we will explain the next step.
Will my insurance cover the damage?
That depends on your policy and on what caused the damage. Coverage is decided by your insurance company, so ask them what is covered and what your deductible is.
Can I choose my own restoration company?
Your insurance company may suggest a company, but check your policy and ask whether you are free to choose the company that does the work.
What should I document for my claim?
Photos and video of the damage before anything is moved or cleaned, a list of damaged items, receipts for emergency expenses, and notes of every call and message with your insurer.
What if the damage happened at a business?
Commercial policies often have their own notice and documentation requirements, and some include coverage for lost income. Report the loss quickly, ask your insurer what applies, and call us so we can start protecting the property.

Call any hour, any day, or send a request and we will follow up.
